Program Overview

Concordia's undergraduate certificates provide students with the opportunity to specialize in another field outside of their major course of study. They can also help secondary/K12 education students earn teacher licensure in various areas of interest.

The sociology certificate explores theoretical perspectives of sociology, key contributions to the discipline, and various research methods in the field. Students will gain an understanding of the meaning of socialization in the human experience- from membership in social groups and institutions, to the structures, functions, and formation of entire societies.

Upon completion of this certificate, students will:

  1. Understand major theoretical perspectives of sociology, key contributions to the discipline, and various research methods in the field
  2. Understand major theoretical perspectives of self and socialization, forms of interaction and social organization, and both concepts and impacts of social stratification
  3. Understand key social institutions (economy, family, religion, schools, government, healthcare, media) and related theoretical perspectives, and how institutions influence one another
  4. Understand concepts and theoretical perspectives of deviance, how social problems contribute to crime, and the interaction between deviance and the justice system
